NDHB: Magic Paper

If I weren't so lazy, I'd include the part about how Joe uses the Geiger counter on Bess and tells her she's not radioactive.

But here's the cute part anyway:

"Don't get technical, Frank," I interrupted. "All we need to know is, it beeps when it finds radioactivity." I took out a pad of paper. "And then there's this."

"Paper?" George said, arching her eyebrows. "Radical new invention."

"Ah, but it's not just any paper." I grabbed a pen and jotted down GEORGE FAYNE LOVES JOE HARDY.

"You wish!" George laughed.

"Watch this." I folded the sheet of paper and stuck it into my water glass.

"Oh, is that how you treat a friend's feelings?" Bess teased.

I grinned. "Just wait." I gave it ten or fifteen seconds, then fished out the wet page. Unfolding it, I showed the girls that the writing was still as crisp as ever. It hadn't even smeared. And the paper hadn't turned to pulp, either.

"Comepletly waterproof," Frank said happily.

"Cool!" George, Nancy, and Bess all said together.

I waggled my eyebrows at George. "Guess this means you're going to love me forever," I teased her.

"Like I said before, you wish." George punch me lightly in the arm, her cheeks pink.

Anywho, George and Joe are obviously the other OTP in the series. I love Bess, but she's a little too flighty for Joe. That, and George and Joe likes the same music and are always beating up on each other. But that's just me. These newer books are a bit painful to read, though. ...As you can probably tell from the excerpt.

Joe does have a bandana in this scene, so I'm not just making it up. They're hanging out in Rome for this book, but I won't disclose any more in case there are some of you who might actually read it. Don't feel bad; I still don't know why I even read it.
